Hyper V 2012 : cannot create the template because source vm has checkpoints

Cloning a virtual machine in Hyper-V 2012 environment may throw the following error:
Cannot create the template because source virtual machine has checkpoints. This feature is not supported for virtual machines that are deployed on hosts running windows Hyper-V. Delete all checkpoints for the source virtual machine and then try the operation again.
ID: 10651
Because the virtual machine or template contain snapshot(s). To clone a VM/template, it should not have any snapshot.
The resolution is mentioned in the error message. Delete all checkpoints for the source virtual machine. Below are the steps to delete checkpoints:
NOTE: Checkpoints is the Microsoft terminology for snapshots (VMware/Citrix)
Make sure you are under VMs and Services view (sub-tree)
Expand All Hosts folder and Highlight the VM or Template
Either right-click the VM and select Manage Checkpoints OR click on Manage Check points from the SCVMM toolbar.
Highlight the checkpoint(s) and click on Delete
This operation may take anywhere between 30 seconds to a minute depending on the size of the disk.
Once checkpoint deletion process is complete. Click OK.
Retry Clone operation of the VM/template. It should work!
